Waternish Point
There has been a lighthouse on the most northerly point of the Waternish peninsula since 1924. It is now automated and powered by solar panels. The point gives wonderful views over the Minch to the Western Isles and is considered to be one of the finest points on Skye for spotting whales and dolphins. There are a number of walking routes to the point, two of which can be found on the Waternish Walks page.
Reputedly the Young Pretender, Charles Edward Stuart, after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746, was attempting to make his escape back to France. He failed to get a berth from the Outer Hebrides and so he tried to get to Skye, disguised as a woman and assisted by the legendary Flora MacDonald. They were said to have been spotted off Waternish Point by two sentries of the MacLeod Militia. Although they were fired upon they managed to row fast enough to escape and make their way towards Kingsburgh.
